About the Dept.

Hey, I’m Brooks.

I started Debt Free Dept. to make getting out of debt simple, honest, and doable for regular people.

My story

Like a lot of people, I used to look at my bank account a few days before payday and wonder where it all went. There was always a reason: a car repair, a birthday, a “good deal” I put on a card. None of it felt like a big deal on its own. Together, it was a big deal.

Things changed when I finally wrote down a plan and gave every dollar a job before the month started. It wasn’t fancy. It took a few messy months to get right. But for the first time, I was telling my money where to go instead of wondering where it went.

Debt Free Dept. is where I share what works: the budget, the debt snowball, the habits, and the tough-love reminders that keep you going when it gets hard.

What we believe

  • Cash, not credit. You can’t dig out of a hole while you’re still digging.
  • A written budget, every month. Every dollar gets a job before the month starts.
  • Smallest debt first. Quick wins build momentum, and momentum gets you finished.
  • Save before the emergency. A cushion keeps surprises off the credit card.
  • No shame, just a plan. Where you start doesn’t decide where you finish.

What this isn’t

Debt Free Dept. is educational content, not financial advice. We don’t recommend specific investments or financial products. For advice about your situation, talk with a qualified professional.
